Daria Ruzhynska

Biography

Daria Ruzhynska is an accomplished opera coach, pianist, and artistic leader with more than 17 years of professional experience in opera, vocal coaching, collaborative piano, and artist development. Throughout her career, she has prepared more than 500 principal and supporting roles, worked on 50+ opera productions, and collaborated with established and emerging singers, conductors, stage directors, orchestras, and artistic teams in the United States and Europe. She holds both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the Kharkiv National University of Arts in Ukraine.

From 2011 to 2021, Ms. Ruzhynska served as Principal Opera Coach and Répétiteur at the Kharkiv National Opera Theater, where she was an integral member of the theater’s music staff for a decade. During her tenure, she prepared more than 500 principal and supporting roles and served as Principal Coach and Pianist for 50+ opera productions, working across a broad range of Italian, French, German, Russian, Czech and Ukrainian repertoire.

Her responsibilities extended throughout the artistic and production process. She worked closely with principal singers and chorus members on role preparation, musical interpretation, style, diction, ensemble work, and preparation for rehearsals with conductors and orchestra. She collaborated with conductors, stage directors, and members of the artistic administration in bringing productions from initial musical preparation and rehearsals to the main stage. Ms. Ruzhynska also participated in casting and audition processes, collaborating with singers and artistic staff in the evaluation and preparation of artists for productions.

Her work at the Kharkiv National Opera Theater extended well beyond staged opera. She was regularly engaged as a pianist and collaborative artist for vocal recitals, orchestral concerts, gala performances, special events, and chamber music programs, collaborating with singers and instrumentalists in performances throughout Ukraine.

A dedicated educator and mentor, Ms. Ruzhynska led the coaching team for the Young Artist Program at the Kharkiv National Opera Theater, guiding emerging singers in operatic interpretation, musicianship, role preparation, and professional development. She also collaborated with the theater’s music staff on contemporary works presented through the Skhid Opera Youth Music Hub, including Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Medium and Michael Nyman’s The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat. Her work in contemporary music also includes several published articles devoted to contemporary musical repertoire.

After relocating to Charlotte, North Carolina, Ms. Ruzhynska continued her career within the American opera community. Her U.S. engagements have included Tosca, Pagliacci, Cavalleria Rusticana, Carmen, and La Bohème with Opera Carolina; Porgy and Bess and Cendrillon with North Carolina Opera; Aida with Opera Grand Rapids; L’elisir d’amore and Carmen with Charleston Opera Theater; John de los Santos and Christopher Weiss’s Service Provider and Lee Hoiby’s Bon Appétit with Amelia Island Opera; and Les Contes d’Hoffmann with the International Lyric Academy.

From 2023 to 2024, Ms. Ruzhynska served as Principal Vocal Coach and Pianist at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts’ A.J. Fletcher Opera Institute. Working closely with the artistic, music, and production teams, she coached singers and contributed to the musical preparation and development of fully staged productions, including Donizetti’s Maria di Rohan and Pergolesi’s Lo frate ’nnamorato.

During the 2024–2025 season, she served as Coach and Accompanist for Opera Carolina, working closely with the company’s Resident Artists on repertoire, role preparation, musical interpretation, and professional development.

Ms. Ruzhynska is frequently engaged as a pianist for professional auditions and vocal competitions. Her credits include the Heafner–Williams Vocal Competition in 2023 and the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition, North Carolina District, in 2024 and 2025.

Her recent engagements also include serving as a member of the Principal Music Staff for the 2025 Bard Music Festival in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York.

A significant part of Ms. Ruzhynska’s work has also been devoted to Russian and Ukrainian vocal repertoire and diction. Drawing on her extensive experience coaching this repertoire in a professional opera environment, she has presented numerous masterclasses and specialized coaching sessions in Russian and Ukrainian repertoire, language, and lyric diction.

Ms. Ruzhynska currently serves as Associate Artistic Director and Principal Coach of Charlotte Lyric Theatre, where she combines her extensive background in opera coaching with artistic leadership, production development, and artist mentorship.

As Associate Artistic Director, she contributes to artistic planning, casting and auditions, repertoire selection, production development, and the cultivation of emerging artists. Drawing on more than a decade of experience within a major repertory opera theater, she brings both musical and practical production experience to the company’s artistic development.
